Outlaw Lightning Sprint History
The Outlaw Mini-Sprint was actually born in Oklahoma in the mid ‘80s. The car was first tried as a cast off midget frame with a 1200 cc motorcycle engine and quick change rear end. (A midget is 3/4 size of a Sprint Car). The feeling was the engines were not powerful enough to handle the drag of the bevel gears or the extra weight of a full midget frame, so the chain drive was substituted for the quick change. Some felt the chassis was overkill because of the weight of the 1 3/8” OD tubing. The dimensions were kept but the frame went to a 1” OD tubing. Later it was changed to 1 1/4" OD for a safer frame.
In 1986, a group of Oklahoma cars came to race at Bill Utz’s modified midget track in Sedalia, MO. Several of the local guys went nuts over these over powered rocket ships and set about to build cars and contact tracks to race. The Midwest Outlaw Mini-sprint Association formed in late ’87 or early ’88. In 2000, the not for profit Association incorporated and changed their name to the Midwest Outlaw Lightning Sprints. The membership felt the name “mini-sprint” gave a negative connotation to the group. The MOLS has now grown to 27 members. We race at tracks through out the Midwest area. These cars have a 925 lb minimum car and driver weight rule. The 4 cylinder motorcycle engines are a maximum of 1205 cc. You can do anything to the engine as long as the displacement is no larger than 1205 cc. (no nitrous, blowers or turbos)
These cars are normally 1 1/2 seconds a lap faster than the modifieds or dirt late models. On a 1/4 mile track these cars will run with a 360 sprint car. These cars are the most affordable way to go fast. Good used cars range in price from $ 6000 to $ 8500. A new car is about
$ 15,000. Most drivers will only use 5 or 6 tires for the season, and the motorcycle engine should run 2 seasons without rebuilding. Our purses are comparable to the modified purses. We give out point fund money and prizes at the end of the season. Come join in the fun.
